Here’s R thought for a New Week’s Resolution:
Drink a gallon of water a day.

Why is water consumption important? Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining every system in your body.  Fluids help by carrying nutrients to your cells and by flushing bacteria out of your body.  Drinking enough water each day also helps to regulate body temperature, keeps your joints lubricated and prevents infections.  Hydration helps everyday functioning by improving sleep quality, cognition and overall mood.  Most people have been told that they should drink 6 to 8, 8-ounce glasses of water each day.  The National Academy of Medicine recommends that men consume 125 ounces and women about 90 ounces of fluid per day including the fluids from water, foods and other drinks. Did you get that?

Well, now is a great time to up the ante and drink more water, especially during the quarantine.  Save your excuses about having to go to the bathroom too much at work.  Can you say moot point? Make a goal, enlist a friend and get started.  Text your friend “hey, just finished 24 oz.  Get drinking.”  Do you hear that positive peer pressure?

Here are 10 hydration tips that can help.

ONE: Keep a bottle with you throughout the day.

TWO: Make your water tasty.  If you don’t enjoy plain water, check out these ideas from Self Magazine. The combinations are endless, but these work best together.

BASIC Strawberry-Blueberry Lemon-Cucumber Orange-Raspberry Cucumber-Jalapeno Cantaloupe-Grape Honeydew-Lime Strawberry-Kiwi Lemon-Lime-Grapefruit Apple-Lemon

FANCY WATER ADVICE For the best results, gently squeeze citrus, cube melons and crush berries before inserting them into your bottle; herbs can be crushed, not chopped, or they may clog your spout if you have one. Then fill your bottle with water (and ice cubes if you wish,) shake, then let steep for a couple hours (or overnight!) before consuming.

THREE: Feeling hungry?  Drink a glass of water first.  Hunger and thirst are often confused.

FOUR: If you have trouble remembering to drink water, drink on a schedule.  Set a goal and use the alarm on your phone.  Drink a glass of water at the beginning of each hour.

FIVE: Drink a glass of water after every bathroom break.

SIX: Choose sparkling water over soda.

SEVEN: Eat foods that are rich in water.  Top picks include cucumber (96% water), zucchini (95% water), watermelons (92% water) and grapefruit (91% water).

EIGHT: Make a rule that every time you work out, you fill a water bottle and finish the entire thing.

NINE: If you take a ride in the car, bring a bottle of water with you. It is easy to mindlessly sip.

TEN: Use a larger water bottle, add a straw or buy a new one that makes you happy when you look at it.
