Vacations are a time to relax, explore new places, and enjoy some well-deserved rest. However, they can also be a challenge for those committed to their fitness goals. As an R3 fitness coach, I understand the importance of maintaining your workout routine, even while traveling. With a few smart strategies and a go-to workout plan, you can stay active and keep your fitness on track, no matter where you are.

Plan Ahead

One of the most effective ways to ensure you don’t skip workouts on vacation is to plan ahead. Before you leave, research your destination to find out what fitness facilities or outdoor activities are available. Many hotels offer gyms or fitness classes, and you can often find local parks, trails, or beaches that are perfect for a workout.

Pack Smart

Packing the right gear can make a big difference. Bring lightweight, versatile workout clothes that can be easily washed and dried. Consider packing a resistance band or a jump rope, both of which take up minimal space and can be used for a variety of exercises. If you have a favorite fitness app or streaming service, make sure it’s loaded on your phone or tablet so you can access workouts on the go.

Make It Fun

Vacations are about enjoying yourself, so incorporate fun physical activities into your itinerary. Go for a hike, rent a bike, take a swim, or try a new sport like paddleboarding or kayaking. Exploring a new place on foot or by bike not only keeps you active but also allows you to see more of your destination. Running or biking is an amazing way to explore a new city!

Stay Accountable

Accountability is key to staying consistent with your workouts. If you’re traveling with friends or family, invite them to join you for a workout. Not only will you have a workout buddy, but you’ll also make memories together. If you’re traveling solo, set goals for your vacation workouts and track your progress. Sharing your goals with someone back home can also provide an extra layer of accountability.

Be Flexible

While it’s great to stick to your workout routine, it’s also important to be flexible. Your vacation schedule might be unpredictable, so adapt your workouts to fit your plans. If you have a busy day of sightseeing, opt for a shorter, high-intensity workout in the morning. If you have more free time, take advantage of it with a longer session.

Example Full-Body Workout Plan

Here’s a simple, effective full-body workout plan that you can do anywhere with little to no equipment. This workout targets all major muscle groups and can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  1. Jumping Jacks – 1 minute
  2. Arm Circles- 1 minute (30 seconds forward and 30 seconds backward)
  3. High Knees – 1 minute
  4. Bodyweight Squats – 1 minute
  5. Reverse lunge to Leg cradle – 1 minute (30 seconds each leg)

Workout (20 minutes)

  1. Push-Ups – 3 sets of 10-15 reps
  2. Bodyweight Squats – 3 sets of 15-20 reps
  3. Plank – 3 sets of 30-60 seconds
  4. Alternating Lunges – 3 sets of 10-15 reps each leg
  5. Superman – 3 sets of 15-20 reps
  6. Side Plank with Reach Thru – 3 sets of 20 reps each side

Cool Down (5 minutes)

  1. Elevated Hamstring stretch – 1 minute (30 seconds each leg)
  2. Quad Stretch – 1 minute (30 seconds each leg)
  3. Triceps Stretch – 1 minute (30 seconds each arm)
  4. Child’s Pose – 1 minute
  5. Cat-Cow Stretch – 1 minute

Tips for Success

  1. Set a Routine: Try to work out at the same time each day. This helps establish a routine and ensures you’re making time for exercise.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Travel can dehydrate you, especially if you’re flying. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.
  3. Listen to Your Body: If you’re feeling tired or sore, give yourself permission to rest or choose a lighter activity. It’s important to balance activity with recovery.
  4. Mix It Up: Keep your workouts interesting by mixing up your routine. Try new exercises, change the order of your workout, or explore new activities.
  5. Stay Positive: Remember that any movement is better than none. Even if you can’t fit in your usual workout, staying active in any way is a win.
